In 1601, the Colegio de San Jose, was founded by the Society of Jesus "to instruct and train the youth in virtue and learning ... and to train ministers of the Gospel for which there is great need in this land.” Three important points can be emphasized in this initial articulation of the goals of formation of the old Colegio. It aims at forming young men in virtud y tetras. It exists to help train ministers [or servants] of the Gospel.
