Company description
Machine-Aid was founded in 1987 as a service provider for the carbon products and mechanical seals industry: supplying parts like carbon brush, brush holders, slip rings, carbon packing, carbon vanes, o-ring, carbon graphite, silicon carbide tungsten carbide, ceramics, stainless steel and lapping these faces. Electrical and mechanical carbons, slip rings and carbon brush holders were also fabricated for customers. The company’s motto was “Why buy the whole when the parts can be replaced?”
While attending a trade conference, we found out about coating seal faces with ceramic through thermal spray coating. The technology was innovative that the company bought its first thermal spray unit – a Eutectic TD2000-to spray the stainless steel seal face with ceramic. Machine-Aid then
Through research, we discovered the wide range of applications of thermal spray coating, like spraying stainless steel on bearing seats and crankshaft journals, babbitt on bearings or bronze on impellers. Soon after, the next few systems were acquired (Metco 10E and Tafa’s 8830). Soon, thermal spray coating was marketed as the alternative to welding and casting when a machine part needed dimensional restoration. In 1988, Machine-Aid launched its mobile unit to be able to work on-site at the customer’s plant. If the machine part was too big to be brought to our shop, we can perform the thermal spray job in-place. This service enabled the customers to closely monitor rush and critical jobs.
Thermal spray coating is not limited to restoring the dimensions of a machine part. It can also be used as a means to protect structures from wear and corrosion. In 1997, Machine-Aid performed the job using Aluminum. Soon after, the company purchased its first High Velocity Oxy-Fuel system to be able to spray tungsten carbide on turbines at a power plant.
Today, Machine-Aid continues to serve markets through its three primary divisions: Thermal Spray Coating, Mechanical Seals and Carbon Products.
